Leigha Kerwin, PsyD

Dr. Leigha Kerwin graduated from the University of Hartford, in West Hartford, CT, where she received her Doctorate of Psychology (PsyD) in Clinical Psychology. Dr. Kerwin also received a Master of Arts (MA) from The University of Hartford and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Sociology from the University of Connecticut. 

Training Background
Before joining Copernican, Dr. Kerwin completed a post-doctoral residency at the Department of U.S. Veterans’ Affairs in Bedford, MA where she specialized in providing psychotherapy to Veterans who presented with mental health concerns, chronic pain, histories of trauma, as well as a variety of other physical and medical health related concerns.  Dr. Kerwin implemented evidence-based treatment models including CBT-Insomnia and Imagery Rehearsal Therapy, CBT-Chronic Pain, ACT-Chronic Pain, PTSD/Chronic Pain Co-Treatment. 
 
Dr. Kerwin completed a predoctoral practicum at Eastern CT State University Counseling and Psychological Services providing individual therapy to university students presenting with a variety of psychosocial stressors.  Additionally, Dr. Kerwin trained at the John J. Allison, Jr. Polaris Center Clinical Day School where she piloted the implementation of a school-wide trauma screener to identify student at high-risk for trauma-based diagnoses and provided individual and group psychotherapy for high school students who had experienced trauma.  Dr. Kerwin completed her pre-doctoral internship at Community Services Institute where she provided community-based therapy to individuals across the lifespan with a wide range of diagnostic presentations and cultural identities.  Dr. Kerwin earned certification in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a treatment for individuals who have experienced trauma.
 

Clinical Experience

Dr. Kerwin’s extensive clinical experience has provided her with the ability to treat individuals across the lifespan, ranging from elementary school aged students through adulthood.  Dr. Kerwin specializes in working with individuals who have experienced trauma and uses modalities including CBT, DBT, and EMDR. Additionally, Dr. Kerwin brings to Copernican her experience in providing psychotherapy geared specifically for those experiencing chronic pain.  At Copernican Clinical Services, Dr. Kerwin provides individual, family, and group therapy in addition to neuropsychological/psychological testing.
