Understanding Mental Health Emergencies vs. Crises
🛑 What Is a Mental Health Emergency?
A mental health emergency is a life-threatening situation involving: • Active suicidal behavior or threats • Homicidal or violent threats toward others • Self-harm needing immediate medical care • Possession of weapons with intent to harm • Severe disorientation or loss of reality • Dangerous levels of intoxication • Erratic behavior posing a serious safety risk How to Respond: 1. Call 911 if there is immediate danger to self or others. 2. Go to the Emergency Room if urgent care is needed. If you’re unable to get there safely, call 911 for transportation support. 3. Call the CCS Emergency Paging Service after emergency responders are involved to coordinate next steps. |
⚠️ What Is a Mental Health Crisis?
A mental health crisis is a non-life-threatening but urgent situation where an individual may be: • Highly distressed, agitated, or emotionally unstable • Expressing suicidal thoughts or threats • Experiencing a worsening of psychiatric symptoms (e.g., not taking medications) • Exhibiting concerning but non-violent behavior • Engaging in superficial self-injury that doesn’t require immediate medical attention • Failing to follow treatment or safety plans • Showing significant mood swings or disruptions in daily functioning How to Respond: 1. Call the CCS Emergency Paging Service at (617) 244-2447 2. Speak with Our On-Call Clinician: A licensed professional will assess the situation, offer clinical guidance, and may contact your clinician, advise further action, or recommend a hospital visit. 3.
