Michal Shapiro, LICSW
Staff MMT Clinician

Michal Shapiro is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) who graduated from Wheelock College/Boston University, where she received her Master of Social Work (MSW) degree. Michal attended Bowdoin College where she received a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Spanish and History with a concentration in Latin American Studies. She is bilingual and has serviced a range of Spanish-speaking patients in their native language.

Training Background
Michal has an extensive background in working within public school systems as a staff member at Franciscan Children’s Hospital. She has worked with students from K-8th grade in the Newton and Boston Public School system. She worked with the Children’s Wellness Initiative (CWI) at Franciscan Children’s Hospital as a bilingual school-based clinician, supervisor, and site manager directly impacting the lives of a diverse, urban, under-resourced school population. Currently, as a social worker for the Bridge program at Newton Public Schools elementary district-wide therapeutic program, she facilitates the transition of students from their home school, in-patient psychiatric, and medical placements to inclusion-based academic placements, helping them stabilize and return to a higher level of academic and behavioral functioning.

Michal’s work in school systems has given her experience with IEP development and integrating various treaters into wrap around care of her students and their caregivers, helping facilitate a holistic understanding of her student’s combined learning and behavioral challenges. Her passion for social work has empowered her to continue advocating for and working with marginalized communities, diverse populations, and individuals with learning disabilities. She utilizes her prior experience doing individual, group, and systems-centered treatment to help address the complex needs of her patients at CCS.

Clinical Experience
Michal’s clinical background has provided her with a breadth of experience in working with spectrum-based and trauma-based patients who struggle with depression, anxiety, and a range of externalizing behaviors. Her ability to address the range of individual, familial and learning concerns that surface with these populations has made her a valuable team member. She excels in her ability to collaborate with co-treaters and holistically integrate treatment experiences in utilizing Multi-Modality Treatment (MMT) interventions. Michal offers synergistically integrated individual, family, and group therapy supports.
