Staff MMT Clinician

Clinical Psychology Doctoral Student at William James College

Katherine Canas is a current fourth-year Clinical Psychology PsyD student at William James College with a master’s degree in forensic psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University. She received a second master’s degree in professional psychology from William James College in June of 2024. Previously, she graduated from Kean University in 2020 with a bachelor’s in psychology. She is bilingual and has serviced a range of Spanish-speaking patients in their native language. She has joined the staff at Tewksbury State Hospital for the 2024-2025 training year working with patients who struggle with severe psychiatric presentations & histories of complex trauma as a therapist and bilingual psychological testing clinician.

Training Background:
Katherine has an extensive background in working with children, adolescents, and adults in various settings including schools, outpatient settings, partial and inpatient programs, and community support programs. Katherine specializes in treating patients with acute psychiatric presentations such as OCD, substance abuse, personality disorders, and patients requiring crisis intervention. She has honed her skills at various Massachusetts agencies as well as a studying abroad in Guayaquil, Ecuador. While at McLean Hospital’s OCD Institute in Belmont, Katherine worked as a behavioral coach, assisting patients with exposure and response prevention (ERP) individual coaching sessions, as well as developing a group focusing on OCD treatment for marginalized populations. She completed both individual and group work, gaining a broader understanding of OCD and OCD-spectrum disorders, risk assessments, and personality disorders. While at the Wayside Youth & Family Support Network, Katherine provided services related to the delivery of mental health care to her clients at their home school as well as consultation services to the school staff. Additionally, she advanced her crisis intervention skills in her emergency room work with children and adolescents as a crisis clinician. While at Advocates – PES Marlborough Hospital ED, Katherine provided psychiatric & substance abuse evaluations, crisis care management, and short-term crisis counseling for individuals and families in crisis in community, clinic, and hospital settings. Her passion for equal access to mental health services has led her to offer counseling services to refugee patients with complex psychiatric histories.

Clinical Experience:
Katherine Canas’ clinical background has provided her extensive experience in working with inpatient and outpatient clients who struggle with complex trauma, OCD, substance abuse, personality disorders, and a range of externalizing behaviors. Katherine’s ability to work with clients who are experiencing acute symptoms has allowed her to assess and assist medical staff in crisis assessment/management scenarios. Her prior experience in individual, sibling, group, and family therapy modalities allows her to holistically address her clients’ presenting issues.
As a bilingual clinician, she is able to effectively communicate with Spanish speaking clients and families seeking treatment in their native language. For these reasons and many more, Katherine is a valuable team member in her work with a diverse mix of fellow clinicians at CCS and within the greater Boston community.
